Telangana 2BHK housing scheme: Who gets a free house and how the selection works

The Telangana government’s Double Bedroom Housing Scheme, commonly known as the 2BHK Housing Scheme, is a flagship welfare housing programme aimed at providing free accommodation to poor and homeless families across the state. The scheme seeks to improve the living conditions for socio-economically weaker sections by offering homes without requiring any financial contribution from beneficiaries.Under the programme, eligible families receive a fully constructed house comprising two bedrooms, a hall, a kitchen and two toilets with an overall plinth area of 560 square feet.Funded by the state government, the scheme is distinct from housing initiatives by other states, which either provide partial financial assistance or rebates on home loans.

Benefits under the scheme

In order to improve their living standards, the scheme offers several benefits to eligible families. Beneficiaries are provided with a completed 2BHK house at no cost. There is no requirement to contribute towards construction expenses or take a housing loan.In rural areas, houses are built on plots measuring 125 square yards, while in urban regions, they receive flats along with an undivided share of land in multi-storey housing complexes.Additionally, the scheme includes supporting infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, roads, drainage and sewage facilities, ensuring that beneficiaries move into fully serviced housing communities.

Who is the scheme meant for?

The programme primarily targets Below Poverty Line (BPL) families who do not own a proper house across both rural and urban Telangana. Under the scheme, the government has reserved allocations for various socially underprivileged groups.This includes a reservation of 50% for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes, and 7% for minorities, in rural regions. In urban regions, the reservation is 17% for SCs, 6% for STs, and 12% for minorities.Houses are also reserved for ex-servicemen/their widows and persons with disabilities.

How are beneficiaries selected?

The selection process involves multiple stages of scrutiny and verification. First, the villages and project locations are identified by the District Level Committee. Applications are then distributed and collected during meetings of gram/ward sabha and urban local bodies, preparing a provisional list of eligible beneficiaries.The provisional list is then forwarded to the Tahsildar, who verifies the eligibility of applicants and examines supporting documents.The verified list is placed again before the Gram Sabha/Ward Sabha, where a draw of lots may be conducted to select beneficiaries when eligible applicants exceed available housesEventually, the list is sent to the District Collector for final approval, and completed houses are allotted to approved beneficiaries.
