The much-awaited holy month of Shravan (Sawan) 2026 has begun today. Lakhs of devotees across India are preparing for one of the country’s biggest spiritual travel seasons as every Monday of Sawan month is considered auspicious. This is the month that witnesses long queues at Shiva temples and thousands of Kanwariyas undertake pilgrimages carrying holy water from sacred rivers.
Visiting a Jyotirlinga temple during Sawan is a lifelong dream of many. The reason behind this is that Shravan is considered the holiest month dedicated to Lord Shiva and across India, devotees observe Monday fasts, perform Rudrabhishek, and plan pilgrimages to Jyotirlingas. For the travel industry, Sawan is equally significant as hotels, trains, airlines and state tourism departments witness a surge in bookings, boosting local economies.
There are 12 sacred Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva, and all attract significantly larger crowds during this month. But among these, there are six temples which see maximum footfall.
