NEW DELHI: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has cancelled his scheduled shows in Bengaluru’s Whitefield after protests by Hindutva activists, police said on Monday.Kamra visited the Whitefield police station on Sunday and informed the authorities that he would not go ahead with the performances at the venue.“He (Kamra) came to the police station and informed that he has decided to cancel the event scheduled in Whitefield due to the opposition by Hindutva activists,” a senior police officer said.The development comes days after the Hindu Rashtra Samanvaya Samiti submitted a petition to the Bengaluru Police seeking cancellation of Kamra’s August 3 stand-up show at URU Whitefield. The group alleged that the comedian had disrespected Hindu deities and claimed the event could pose a threat to law and order and religious harmony.Kamra later announced on X that his shows scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday had been shifted to a venue in Koramangala.He also said that BookMyShow would process refunds for tickets booked for the Whitefield shows and requested audiences to book tickets for the Koramangala venue, while noting that seating there is limited.

Kamra has frequently courted controversy over his stand-up routines and public remarks. Last year, Shiv Sena workers vandalised the studio and hotel premises where he had performed after taking objection to his remarks.In 2020, Kamra sparked another controversy after confronting a journalist on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Lucknow. He shared a video of the incident on X, after which IndiGo, SpiceJet, GoAir and Air India barred him from flying with their airlines.
