A visit to a popular bakery is usually about choosing between too many tempting desserts. But one recent video from Delhi has people looking at a pastry display for a very different reason.A cockroach was reportedly spotted crawling inside the display refrigerator at The Big Chill Cakery in Khan Market, Delhi. And, unfortunately, it was seen close to the brownies.The video was shared on Instagram by food vlogger Kenny, who goes by @giantgrubs. In the clip, he zooms in on the glass display, where a small cockroach can be seen moving around inside the refrigerator.It’s the sort of thing that makes you do a double take. The desserts are sitting behind the glass, looking ready to be served, while the insect is moving around in the same area.Kenny said he didn’t immediately take the incident public. According to his post, he first contacted the cafe privately and tried to bring the issue to its attention.He said he had spotted “a small cockroach inside the display refrigerator right next to the brownies” and wanted the establishment to address the problem. He also described his post as constructive feedback, saying he hoped the management would take corrective steps.At the time he shared the video, Kenny said he hadn’t received a response from the cafe.The clip has since sparked a familiar debate about food hygiene at restaurants and cafes. And this time, it’s not really about whether the food looks good or whether a place is worth visiting. It’s about something much more basic: how food is being stored and protected before it reaches the customer.A cockroach inside a food display is obviously going to make people uncomfortable, especially when the display contains ready-to-eat desserts. Customers generally expect food kept behind glass to be protected from exactly this kind of contamination.But there’s also a need to keep the incident in perspective. One video can show what happened at one particular moment, but it doesn’t necessarily tell us what the establishment’s overall hygiene practices are.
